Case Study: King of Texas Has a Paradigm Shift Overnight

As business leaders, we’re all craving that moment where it all turns around.

The cycle of running a business day-to-day can be exhausting and repetitive, and we don’t always get to see the result of all the time and energy we’re putting into our work.

Passionate and drive can only take you so far, and when you’re putting in an extra 20 or 30 hours of work every week, it can be challenging to see the big picture of where you and your company stand.

It can be easy to wonder, “Am I making any progress at all?”

But sometimes, all you need is a bit of a shock to the system that helps you refocus, realign, and gain a new confidence in the way you’re moving forward and where you’re heading.

Just ask Kelly B. Van Winkle, the president and CEO of King of Texas Construction Company.

A couple of years ago, King of Texas had reached 100 employees. Things were going well, but they felt like they had peaked and were beginning to stagnate.

They were struggling to find continued opportunities for growth, and Kelly was realizing that they lacked the systems and protocols that were necessary for a company their size, with an unclear organizational structure and a team whose roles and responsibilities weren’t very well defined.

These and other factors were leading to culture issues. New team members felt lost, while poor communication between existing employees led to conflict both in the field and in the office. People disagreed on the best way to get things done, and things weren’t working smoothly in almost any area.

To turn things around, Kelly reached out to Lean Leaders for help in developing a long-term strategic plan, which would be the first in her company’s history. She had been in her CEO role for a few years, but wanted to establish one-year and five-year visions that would help guide her priorities and chart the path forward. She wanted Lean Leaders to help her Get Strategy, Done

And it worked.

In only three months, the company changed dramatically. Team meetings became more productive and efficient, employees rediscovered their voice and began communicating effectively, culture around the office and on job sites improved, and leaders began making decisions guided by data rather than instinct.

Kelly was recently featured as a case study for examining how to plan for success in Vistage Perspectives Magazine, and shared a little bit about how working with us on her strategy was a catalyst for change:
